A recent note on Apple Insider pointed to some developer information leaking out about Leopard, specifically that the system will now come with file recovery built into disk utility. This seems like a pretty big deal and an important feature. And yet it drew criticism from those who feel that Apple has stepped once too often on third party developers. An article discussing this on Macslash had this to say:
“According to a report on AppleInsider, Leopard’s Disk Utility will allow users to recover deleted files. The app says your chances are better if the disk isn’t heavily fragmented and you haven’t written a lot of new files. This is great! I wonder how the developers of all the hard disk utilities feel about this. How very Microsoftian!”
I presume they are referring to tools like data rescue from prosoft. You can dismiss it as more mac whining from an over eager writer, but it brings up a question that has long been asked about OS updates.
Should key technologies be included in the operating system at the expense of third party developers?
