Should Apple Include features in The OS at the Expense of Developers?

A recent note on Apple Insider pointed to some developer information leaking out about Leopard, specifically that the system will now come with file recovery built into disk utility. This seems like a pretty big deal and an important feature. And yet it drew criticism from those who feel that Apple has stepped once too often on third party developers. An article discussing this on Macslash had this to say:

“According to a report on AppleInsider, Leopard’s Disk Utility will allow users to recover deleted files. The app says your chances are better if the disk isn’t heavily fragmented and you haven’t written a lot of new files. This is great! I wonder how the developers of all the hard disk utilities feel about this. How very Microsoftian!”

I presume they are referring to tools like data rescue from prosoft. You can dismiss it as more mac whining from an over eager writer, but it brings up a question that has long been asked about OS updates.

Should key technologies be included in the operating system at the expense of third party developers?

Nikon Announces D40

Nikon’s new low cost DSLR is officially announced after being much rumoured. It seems like a replacement for the D50 and a worthy competitor for the Canon 400D although it only has a 6megapixel sensor and lacks the 400D’s anti dust systems. But then, $499 so, you cant really argue with that for a good SLR. It seems that DLSR’s are now beginning to reach the prices budget film SLR’s had reached prior to their untimely demises.

I Hate Digg

For a long time I wondered what all the fuss was with digg.com I actually never really paid much attention to it until my site started getting linked to it (which ended up causing me to have to move service providers) Recently I started keeping an eye on the Apple section, and I’m constantly amazed by some of the comments posted.

I understand that the whole point is that the users themselves monitor the content, but the level of obnoxiousness is unbelievable. No matter who posts what, someone will attack them for being an “Apple Fan boy” despite the fact that it’s under the Apple Technology section. Then there’s what seems to be a community within a community of people who seem to live there, and vehemently protect their little patch of cyber turf, complaining loudly if anyone posts anything that they don’t agree with or is outside of what they think should be on their precious community. It’s like watching a room full of schoolchildren when the teacher goes out of the classroom.

The funny thing is I’ve seen these people, or these types of people in real life. They’re nerds of the worst kind. They have their own sense of humour that only they get. They smugly assume they’re better than everyone else because they think they know how the windows registry works. They are almost always guys and almost always have difficulty communicating with normal people (and girls) other than to be awkward and sarcastic. They are the worst kind of fanatics, they seem to live on the Internet, and most of them seem to hang out on Digg.

Postcard Polaroid

A wackey but interesting little website.

“Have you ever tried popping a stamp on a polaroid and dropping it in the post? Here’s a few we’ve sent each other. Send one to a friend. Or better still send us one. It’s way better than getting another bill.”

Check it out – It’s cool!
