Testing something on the blog, incase there’s downtime.

I’m testing something on this blog later so if there’s some strangeness going on, here’s why. I’ve been doing a lot more with my Tumblr blog lately as it allows me to publish quick thoughts and links quicker than posting them here. Plus it keeps this for the more serious and in-depth stuff. However, I thought it would be nice if I could post a daily digest of the things I’ve been posting on tumblr here and I’ve found a WordPress plug in to do it, but I’m not sure if it’s going to work properly or if it’s just going to be hideous. Anyway, It should publish it’s first digest tonight some time so if things go pear shaped then that’s why! I’m using the “Digest Post”plug in. If anyone knows of a better option please let me know as this seems a bit finicky to configure.

[Update] It didn’t work, but at least it didn’t break anything.

[Update2] Trying it again with a different plug-in. Hopefully this will work a bit better

New Look

website.png

Regular readers of this blog will undoubtedly have noticed that the site has undergone a makeover again. It’s not that long since I last changed the theme, but over the last few months I have grown dissatisfied with it the way it was. It’s not that it was particularly bad, it’s just that it didn’t support some options and some plugins wouldn’t work with it. When I was setting up The Aperture Blog, I used the highly flexible “Headlines” from WooThemes and I was impressed with it and how it worked on the back end, so I set about using a modified version of that for the new look.

The cool background image is from Graphic River. One of the nice things about this theme is that it sports a handy social media sharing function at the bottom of every post, as I know some of you have been asking for that. Anyway, feedback as always is welcome.

I’ve started a “photo a day” project for the new year. Well, I started it on New Year’s day, but I’m only getting around to posting about it here now. I wanted to have a few day’s worth of posts on it before really publicizing it. I tried to do this last year too but it didn’t work out to well. I think I got to day 17 before I gave up. Now that I’m working from home though it should be a bit easier! Anyway, I’ll try to make it interesting so please pay it a visit and subscribe or check back regularly. Thanks

New Year, New Look

New Year, New Look

Even though I recently upgraded the theme on the site I was never quite happy with it, so once again I’ve given it a major overhaul. Well, it is the new year, so why not. I was never really happy with the previous design, and the more I tweaked it the more cluttered and messy it got. I’m trying to keep this look a lot cleaner. I’ll keep the ads to a minimum and try and not weight it down with too many plug-ins etc.

The theme is based on the excellent “Therapy” from Woo Themes. I’m really glad I signed up with their developer package as it’s allowed me to try out several options on my local server before committing to anything. I really like this one as it’s quite apple like. Anyway, I hope you enjoy, and please feel free to leave feedback!

Happy New Year – Some thoughts and Plans for 2010

2010.jpg

So, 2010 has finally come. I guess we probably won’t see Jupiter turing into a star this year, but still, it’s a pretty big milestone. 2010 promises to be interesting technology wise, if only because we will more than likely see the mythical Apple tablet finally reach reality. Also, Blu-Ray 3D should begin to make its way to consumers. As for me, I have some vague plans and ideas for the new year.

The first is switching from Ecto to Mars Edit as my main blogging client. I really liked Ecto for its formatted editing of blog posts but there are so many little issues with it and the developers seem to have stopped developing it that it’s time to change. Having spent more time with HTML lately I’m a bit more comfortable with Mars Edit’s HTML only editing view now. While it lacks some of Ecto’s features, it’s a much better piece of software overall. I’m still using the trial but I’m very happy with it so I’ll be getting a full license in a day or two.

Photo Site Make Over

I recently gave my much neglected Photography Website a make over. I revamped the whole thing with a new theme that I worked hard on customising to give it my own identity. I launched it last week and the reception seems to have been pretty good. In my enthusiasm I completely forgot to post a link to it here. So, please have a look and subscribe to the RSS. I’ll be writing an article here sometime this week (hopefully) about how I went about the modifications using some pretty cool mac software. Stay Tuned.
