I haven’t really been keeping up on the games world too much lately but I came across this in my news reader this morning. It’s a new game for the PS3 that looks simply gorgeous. It’s an old fashioned platform style fantasy game, only with modern 3d graphics and a pretty good physics engine. Think ghosts and goblins meets little big planet.

PS3 Sales Figures in 2008 might surprise you.

So the PS3 is going no where right? It’s failed to compete with Microsoft and Nintendo, Right? I mean that’s what you would believe from reading the writings of numerous analysts and technology blogs. So you might be a little surprised to read that the PS3 sold almost as many units 10.77 million as the xbox 360 did last year (10.8 million). If Sony managed to pull that off considering that Microsoft are practically giving the damn things away, then I think the future of Sony’s console is far rosier that some people want you to think.

Which bares another important question… why do so many people want you to think the PS3 is doing badly? Are people just that anti Sony ? Is it just lazy journalism? I just don’t get where this is coming from. It’s like all those people who keep trying to tell you that the iPod is over the hill and done for, and Apple keeps posting record quarter after record quarter.

Sony’s PlayStation 3 up 60% in sales from last year

For all those people out there predicting the demise of the PS3, your predictions and musings are about as accurate as those predicting the demise of blu-ray. From PlayStation Universe (PSU):

With the Wall Street Journal and other media outlets reporting doom and gloom for the black behemoth, sales data has indicated that PS3 sales are actually up 60 percent in comparison to 2008. That’s quite the feat considering the system is often considers a little too pricey for the average consumer.

The tech industry, particularly the north american technology industry is so blinkered by the way the computer industry works, the only merit of success they understand is market share. They compare the sale of the Nintendo Wii, which never really competed with the PS3, and the xbox 360, which is nearing the end of it’s life, so Microsoft are able to sell them for a song, and have re-positioned the console against the wii. They’re selling them for next to nothing and the so called pundits are saying this is a sign of Sony’s failure. This new data shows that the 360 price drop has not taken sales away from the PS3 and probably impacted Wii growth more than anything.

PS3 Numbers aren’t that bad

Like the” blu-ray is dying” myth, there’s another one that seems to be doing the rounds at the moment, and that is that the PS3 is dying, going no where and doomed to failure. Except, like with the blu-ray myth the numbers just don’t add up. First of all, if you consider that the main competitor for the PS3 is the Xbox 360, and look at the total sales to dat you might be surprised.

According to VGChartz.com the Xbox 360 has sold 25 million units and the PS3 has sold 18 million units. If you consider the fact that the PS3 is a year younger than the 360 then this puts them on pretty even footing on a per year basis. (In fact vgcharts has a handy graph that shows sales from launch, and from that respect the PS3 is actually selling faster than the 360)It’s even more impressive when you consider the price difference. Of course the numbers in North America give the 360 a strong advantage, but then, despite what some pundits might like to think, there is a world outside the USA and Canada.

Another thing to consider is, what is the measure of success. For some of the pundits out there, the only measure of success is market share, and only if you’re in first position can you consider yourself successful. But we’ve been down this road before with Apple. No one considerers the mac a failure any more despite its market share compared to Windows. For years people called on Apple to lower their prices to gain market share, but Apple instead chose a more quantifiable measure of success – actual revenue, which when you think about it is what a company is there for.

Beyond the “Bag of hurt”: Separating fact from fiction about Blu-Ray

HD-Movies-2.gifEver since Steve Jobs launched the new Apple Laptops at a special event in Cupertino recently, one story has done the rounds with quite a degree of ferocity, and it has nothing to do with the Notebooks that were released. During the Q&A session afterwards, when asked why there were no Blu-Ray drives in the new notebooks Steve Jobs responded by saying that currently Blu-Ray was “a bag of hurt”. This comment has unsurprisingly been seized upon by many and twisted and contorted to mean a dozen different things. Once again, though, the dialog surrounding this has shown that there is quite a lot of misinformation floating around in cyberspace about Blu-Ray and this gave the format’s detractors another opportunity to jump on their collective soap boxes spread the myths about the format, most of which are simply not true. In light of this what follows is a look at some of the most common perceptions about Blu-Ray and why they’re wrong.

Myth 1: Blu-Ray is failure.
