I’ve been working on the railroad

Ever since I started working for myself I’ve been delivering most of my work via the internet, and the iDisk functionality of Mobile Me has been indispensable. I often have to send large files to clients and the sharing ability of iDisk has been great. I was particularly excited when Apple released their iDisk for iPhone App and the other day that excitement was finally justified when that App saved the day for me.

I had sent a particularly large file to a client the night before and I was on the train when I received an email regarding the project. It seems that he had not received the link I had sent him the night before. I was in the middle of nowhere, far away from any wifi connection. I thought I was going to have to get off at the next station and head home, but then I remembered the iDisk App. I logged on, tapped on the shared files link, selected the file, and tapped on the option to send the link again. Because it syncs with your address book I didn’t even have to remember the full email address, it just plucked it from my contacts list. Within the space of sixty seconds my issue was solved. A minute later I received an email back from my client thanking me. I was blown away by how simple the process was and how my iPhone had helped solve an otherwise day ruining problem.

I read somewhere the other day that “Apple was stifling innovation” on the iPhone. I couldn’t disagree more. The iPhone has changed my life. It has freed me from the confines of my office and has enabled me to work in innovative ways that would have been impossible just a few years ago. For all those crying for greater “openness” and “freedom” for the platform, I can’t help but wonder if the iPhone had followed the path of Linux and most other true open source projects we’d be able to do half the things the platform has enabled us to do. I don’t care if a small handful out of thousands of Apps have been rejected for questionable reasons, or if there’s a million fart Apps on the App store. I wouldn’t give up the iPhone for all the tea in china (and I drink a lot of tea) While certain people go off on a self gratifying crusade against the “evils” of Apple the rest of us are getting work done, and enjoying one of the most innovative products the technology industry has ever seen.
