With tablet rumors swirling out of control and supposed iPod touch photos doing the rounds, the build up to Apple’s usual September annual event seem to be bigger than ever this year. Just to play devils advocate here are my thoughts as to what we will see for Apple’s consumer electronics fall lineup. (Disclaimer: I have no inside information. This is just pure speculation and it’s just for the fun of it so please don’t take this too seriously)
- iPod touch with camera. This will come in 16, 32 and 64gb versions. I would say that the inclusion of a camera is a near certainty at this stage. It will more than likely do video too. This will prety much bring the iPod Touch in line with the iPhone in terms of hardware (minus the phone part obviously). I doubt that there will be many other surprises related to the iPod touch.
- iPod nano will be upgraded with a slightly different form factor and may feature a camera. I’d say capacities will probably remain the same although we might see a 32gb version.
- iPod Classic will either be discontinued or remain the same, but I doubt it will see upgrades. I still see a lot of people out and about with iPod classics so I don’t know if their sales have dropped off to the point where Apple will kill it yet. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Either way, I doubt it will be upgraded.
- iTunes 9. I think this is pretty much a given too considering that they almost always update iTunes at this event. whether the recent iTunes rumors are true or not remains to be seen. I would love to see blu-ray added to iTunes but i am skeptical. Well, skeptical but hopeful. As for the rumored social features, I think it’s a possibility. People have dismissed the rumors as fake because Apple doesn’t do social, but I think they are beginning to realize that social networking is a driving force in the industry and isn’t going anywhere any time soon. So I do think it’s possible. Besides, what else are they going to do to itunes at this point?
- “Cocktail” album format. I would give this a high degree of probability of being revealed at the event too. Expect a lot to be made of this but in reality will be nothing that special. And it it will probably be US only.
- AppleTV. I really hope they update the AppleTV, because it really really needs it. The complete lack of any rumors around it though leave me doubtful. Still, I would love to see the AppleTV get a complete revamp, so here’s hoping.
- iPod 3.1 and iPhone 3.1 will likely be released.
Well, there you have it. I know there is nothing sexy or revolutionary here, but I don’t think we’ll see anything that major. Still, I would like to be proven wrong. iTunes 9 might hold some surprises, and if they do update the AppleTV that could be interesting too. Still, the event itself is still only a rumor at this point so anything could happen. Like I said this is just a bit of fun.

I got my 160GB classic stolen several month ago and I really hope the classic will be refreshed (at least in capacity).
I have an iPhone but I miss the classic – the ability to have all of my music with me all the time alogside with better battery performance (the iPhone needs to be charged multiple time a day when I uses it as an iPod all day..
