If Apple Does Do a Netbook…

One thing that occured to me recently is how much fait the PC industry is putting in Netbooks at the moment. It seems to be the one area where there is actual growth. However, as I mentioned previously, this is a serious potential thorn in Microsoft’s side as many manufacturers are using Linux instead of Windows. It certainly has microsoft worried, as they mentioned it as one of the causes of their drop in revenue at their recent earnings announcement.

So what happens then when Apple enters the market. As it has done with the mp3 player before it, Apple has bided its time and waited for the market to become established enough that people want something in that space, but not so established that any one company has dominance. So If (more like when, let’s face it) Apple does launch a netbook, it will probably be something no one is expecting, and if they manage to pull off the same success they’ve had with the iPhone and the iPod, then the rest of the computer industry could be in serious trouble.

Think about it. Everyone is putting, if not all, then a lot of their eggs in the Netbook basket. If Apple comes in and sweeps the basket out from under them then you’re left with a lot of companies having invested in a market now dominated by Apple (and we know from the iPod how well that turns out for everyone else) and Microsoft having lost out a huge chunk of it’s previous market.

Anyway, it’s just a thought, but either way – interesting times ahead.
