Canon’s Latest Rebel

Another year, another Canon rebel. My first ever digital camera was the Eos 300D (or original digital rebel) so I still take interest in the line, although Canon are fairly churning them out now. And while the specs seem like a good jump, the pictures from the pre production units are nothing special. I defy anyone to tell them from images from the previous generation. Canon’s main marketing push with this though is the video option which they make the bold claim that it offers full 1080 hd. Clearly this is aimed at out speccing the Nikon D90, but of course there’s a catch.

It only records 1080 at 20fps, making it effectively useless. Not only that but 720p shoots at 30fps rather than giving the option of the more useful (to indie film makers any way) of 24fps. When you consider Canon has a large camcorder devision, you’d think they’d know these things. There’s the usual conspiracy theories doing the rounds, that Canon don’t want to infringe on their camcorder sales, but In my opinion it’s just laziness and lack of forward thinking that led them to cripple the video in this way. They probably figured people wouldn’t care, and you know what, for the market this camera is aimed at, they probably won’t, but it denies those who could use this for some serious film making a potential tool.
