Microsoft predicts tough future for iPhone

From Macworld UK:

Microsoft entertainment and devices division’s Robbie Bach is not surprised that Apple’s iPhone outsold RIM’s Blackberry this quarter. However, he thinks the iPhone’s success this quarter was due to the launch of the 3G model, and notes that next quarter Research in Motion (RIM) is set for a big launch that could knock Apple off its perch.

Yes, because teenagers and college kids get soooo excited about the latest blackberry.

You’d be surprised: RIM’s 126% year on year unit sales increase certainly isn’t coming from the business market, which is already saturated. And the BlackBerry Storm is a pretty sweet looking phone…

Don’t get me wrong – I’ve nothing against the blackberry, and I agree, the storm looks like a nice phone, but it’s just not at the same level of hype. To the “youth” of the western world the iPhone is a fashion statement as well as a continuation of the iPod cultural iconography. The blackberry, to these people with surprising buying power, however great is just another phone. The fact that Apple was able to outsell RIM considering it’s only just entered the market, and considering the limited number of carrier compared to the ones that carry RIM products speaks volumes.
