European Pricing

For those of you reading this blog in the US I thought you might find this interesting. Given the recent plummeting dollar value, here is the cost of a few things in Europe converted to their dollar equivalent, so if you’re planning a trip to europe, brace yourself.

Starbucks Vente Latte: €3.90 or $6.07

Apple iPod Shuffle: €45 or $70

Average Price of a Cell Phone Call (Peak - Per Minute): €0.40 or $0.62

Average price of a Deli Sandwich: €4.95 or $7.13

Average price of a DVD (New Release): €24 or $37.39

Liter of Milk: €1.14 or $1.77

Cinema Ticket: €7.00 or $10.90

I was in Scotland last month, if I recall I got $.50 for one US dollar, I hope things start to level out, this has to be having a negitive effect on tourism from the US.

Does it make sense to travel to the US to buy cameras and lenses, or do people from Europe get hit with a serious duty when they bring something back from the US?

It depends. A lot of people are travelling to the US from here (Ireland) and bringing stuff back. It’s hit and miss whether or not you get caught by customs, but they’re pretty lax in Dublin airport because they’re more concerned with stropping drugs getting in than people who go on shopping trips to New York (which is a major industry in itself here at the moment). If you are buying something big like a camera the trick is to just get rid of the boxes and claim you had it all along !

You’re right though - it is having a major negative impact on tourism from the US. On the other hand, tourism to the US must be shooting up.
