Just some quick thoughts on the results of Apple’s recent iPhone update…
If Apple didn’t set out to maliciously brick unlocked iPhones, why did they not include a simple check in the software update process to see if the phone was unlocked or not and if it was, report an error and abort the update?
Was it really necessary to disable people’s phones? I find it hard to believe that this was unavoidable. I can understand not allowing people to update their unlocked iPhone, or attempting to block future unlock attempts, but it just seems to me that disabling unlocked phones was not necessary.
I know the onus is on the end user not to upgrade the software, but then why did Apple not state categorically that the update would kill an unlocked iPhone rather than saying it probably will?
Come to think of it, how do you cause “irreparable damage” to software in the first place?
(Just to be clear, I don’t own an iPhone)
