Quick thought on the iPhone “Lines”

I know a lot of people are sick of the iPhone hype already, but consider this for a moment…

When you see all the people lining up, the massive press coverage and all the media hysteria over the iPhone, you have to take a step back an marvel at what a remarkable achievement this is for Apple. For a company that the very same media had all but written off only a few short years ago, to turn around this far is truly amazing. To come back from the brink and now be the centre of possibly the biggest technology story of the decade (whether or not you agree with it) out hyping the launch of the PS3, the Xbox 360 and Windows Vista combined is staggering.

Whatever you think about the iPhone, you have to hand it to Steve Jobs. In some ways this is the ultimate vindication for the idealists that started Apple Computer all those years ago. They wanted to change the world, and for a period the seemed like they were heading into a foot note in history, but now they are ingrained into the human consciousness all over the world in a way very few companies ever have been. All those that laughed off the company as irrelevant now shake at any move Apple makes. If the iPhone is a huge success, and given the queues already forming there is every indication that it will be (at least initially) then it is the end of a very long journey started in a garage in california all those years ago.

Congratulations to Apple and all those who work there. This is an amazing, remarkable, historic achievement.
