Apple Using 6 bit Displays. Hysterical Over reaction or Serious Problem
This is a hard one to call. Apparently what had originally seemed like the latest outrageous law suit against Apple might actually have some weight behind it. The class action suit that was launched last week, which claims that Apple was falsely advertising the capabilities of it’s LCD panels have led some to research and come up with what might be the source of the problem, Apple using 6bit displays. Of course there is no hard fact for this.
Ars Technica Writes:
“How do we know what LCD panels Apple is using? Well, so far I haven’t found any direct reference to that by Apple. However, there are instructions for finding out, which led one Mac user to a 6-bit LCD from Samsung.”
Those instructions?
Well I’d love to say but the site is gone. So it could be, or it might not be. The problem is, that in the mac universe, could be is often enough. The same article has lots of comments from people who thought that their displays were fine until they read the article. Which kind of speaks for itself. I’m sure we’ll be hearing lots more about this before the week is out.
I really doubt Apple would go out of it’s way to use cheap displays in it’s products and then cover it up. I know I will be accused of being a “fanboy” for saying this, but Apple generally uses reasonable components in it’s products. Again, I could be wrong, but unfortunately, many people will pre judge apple over this one. Expect hysteria to reach fever pitch very soon, all without any hard information.

hey Thomas.
I actually did the required steps to find out what display I had and discovered that it is a samsung LTN133W2, which at the samsung website turns out is only a 6-bit LCD screen, with only 262k colors.
I actually am upset about this, having just purchased and loaded Adobe CS3.
Granted, I only have a macbook, but I still feeled fooled royally.
