I know I should ignore it. I know I should just let it go, but every time one of these stories pops up you just want to grab someone and shake them. Think Secret published a story a while ago about Apple readying a new Spreadsheet module for iWork (it had to start with Think Secret really, didn’t it) and the conspiracy nuts jumped on this like moths to a flame, that this is somehow going to be an Excel “killer” and will ultimately mean that Microsoft will drop office for the mac (shortly after Adobe announces they are killing Photoshop).
Ok, everyone take a deep breath.
If this is true, Apple are just replacing their defunct Apple Works module. This isn’t a competitor for Microsoft Office, it’s a competitor for Microsoft Works (which is not available on the mac)and it’s a huge gaping hole in the Mac’s software line-up. Office is expensive and targeted at businesses. Home and Small Business users need similar software, but with a more basic toolset, and that’s what iWork is meant to be. An entry level office suite, along the lines of the former Apple Works or Microsoft Works.
Unless of course they decide to release iWork Pro.
Mmm, now there’s a thought.
